The Iyengar Association of the Upper Midwest serves the upper midwest region including Minnesota, Iowa, Western Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota.
The founding of the BKS Iyengar Yoga Association of Minnesota was inspired directly by Mr. lyengar's visit to Minnesota in 1987. Guruji was in the U.S. for the National Iyengar Yoga Convention at Harvard University and was kind enough to visit on his way from Western Canada to the East Coast.
Fundraisers were organized for Mr. Iyengar's visit, which included a teacher training. With the funds leftover from these events, Mr. Iyengar requested that the coordinating committee for his visit start the B.K.S. Iyengar Association of Minnesota (IYAMN).
June 2019, the members voted to change the name from IYAMN to IYAUM to include all regions represented. It was legally recognized on June 15, 2019.
Our purpose is to promote and disseminate the art, science, and philosophy of yoga according to the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar.
We fulfill this mission in three ways:
By building an Iyengar community that values maitri and karuna (friendliness and compassion). We are welcoming to students of all abilities, body type, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, and economic status. We are committed to social justice and seek to attain ahimsa (non-violence), both within the individual self and the community we serve.
By advancing public education in the classical teachings of the science of Yoga based upon the principles of the highest standards of personal conduct and service to others through events, classes, demonstrations, meetings, etc.
By offering scholarships for association events and other educational opportunities related to the study of Iyengar Yoga.
We are a member-supported non-profit. Members of IYAUM receive discounts on workshops, free admission to our Bi-Annual 'Yoga Day' events and the satisfaction of supporting an organization dedicated to the profound teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar.
