Board of Directors

President:  Nancy Marcy

Nancy Marcy is a CIYT at the Intermediate Junior I level, as well as a C-IATY. A retired physical education teacher, she has been practicing yoga regularly since 2000. Nancy teaches group classes at various venues in the Twin Cities and conducts private lessons in her home. She continues to study with Joy Laine, and Chris Saudek.

Vice President:  Luanne Laurents 

Luanne has been practicing yoga for over 25 years, studying with Joy Laine and Kristin Chirhart. She is a CIYT at the Introductory II level. Luanne has a background in organizational psychology. 

Treasurer:  Julie Sybrant 

Julie was inspired to begin practicing Iyengar Yoga by her daughter, Molly Gallagher, CIYT, who teaches in Decorah, IA. Julie has studied at Mind Body Solutions and continues to take class with Nancy Marcy. She appreciates Iyengar yoga because of how props allow her to practice in spite of some physical limitations. Having retired from a career in corporate IT, Julie continues to work as an income tax preparer.

Secretary:  Nancy Footner  

Nancy discovered Iyengar Yoga  in the mid 1980’s, while living in San Francisco.  Moving to Iowa City, IA in the early 90's, she founded Friendship Yoga in 1993.  Since 1998, Nancy has made four trips to RIMYI and is certified at the Intermediate Jr 1 Level. For over 20 years, Friendship Yoga has sponsored two yearly weekend workshops with Senior Iyengar teachers, drawing students not only from Iowa City but from adjoining states.

 

Education & Events:  Mona McNeely

Mona is a CIYT at the Introductory II level. She has been practicing yoga since 2002 and currently teaches at Mind Body Solutions in Minnetonka, MN. She continues to study under the mentorship of Momi Jhung and attends teacher training with Chris Saudek. She believes wholeheartedly in the benefits of Iyengar Yoga and is honored to pass onto her students what she has learned.

Membership & Education:  Mary Jo Nissen

Mary Jo studied Iyengar Yoga with Kristin Chirhart and Lee Sverkerson for 25 years, and she continues her study with Jeanne Barkey and Joy Laine at the BKS Iyengar Yoga Center of Minneapolis. She had two careers -- the first as a cognitive scientist and the second as a cancer epidemiologist -- but is now retired

Media & Communications:  Shannyn Joy Potter 

Shannyn Joy Potter, is a CIYT, Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor, at the Intro II level and a C-IATY, Certified International Yoga Therapist. She has been practicing yoga since the mid 90's and teaching since 2011. She studies with teachers locally and abroad and teaches throughout the Twin Cities. Shannyn also holds a B.F.A., and makes large, abstract sculptures.

IYAUM Liaison to IYNAUS, Susan Johnson

Susan is a CIYT at the Introductory level. She began studying the Iyengar method of yoga in 1997 and continues to study regularly with senior Iyengar teachers, visiting Pune twice. She has found that through a dedicated practice one can attain a cultivation of physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being. She believes it is important to incorporate the philosophy of yoga in her personal practice as well as in her teaching. Susan also teaches 2nd grade in Saint Paul.

Regarding Trademark Usage:

In accordance with his lifetime contribution to the art, science, and philosophy of yoga, B.K.S.Iyengar pursued trademark protection to ensure that yoga associated with his name reflects his work.  As of August 14, 2007 the name "IYENGAR" associated with "YOGA" has been registered as a trademark and is protected in the United States in connection with the teaching of Iyengar Yoga.  Because the Iyengar name is trademarked, teachers who are not certified in the Iyengar method are not permitted to represent or describe their classes using the word “Iyengar” in any way. They may not claim to teach “Iyengar Yoga” or any variant of that label, such as “Iyengar influenced,” “Iyengar based,” or “Iyengar style.” They may not claim to mix Iyengar yoga with other styles. On the other hand, any yoga teacher may make factually correct biographical statements such as “I have studied with senior Iyengar teacher [name of teacher] at the Iyengar Institute of X,” or “my personal practice has benefitted from the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar.”
